The National Marine Sanctuary Foundation (NMSF) respects your privacy and we know that you care about how information is used and shared.
Information Collection, Use, and Sharing
NMSF and its service providers collect Personal Information that you provide while using the Sites. Personal Information” is information that identifies you as an individual or relates to an identifiable person. For instance, NMSF gathers information when you fill out Site profile forms to receive our newsletter, make donations and participate in advocacy action alerts.
If you choose to link your social media accounts to your Site account, certain Personal Information from your social media account will be shared with us in accordance with the specific policies of the third-party social media platforms. This may include Personal Information that is part of your profile or your friends’ profiles.
If you provide our Sites with any Personal Information relating to other people, you represent that you have the authority to do. We do not knowingly collect information from children under 13 years of age. We do not track your browsing habits across other third-party sites.
NMSF is the sole owner of the information collected on its Sites. NMSF does not sell or share information with our vendors, sponsors or others.
All consultants and contractors working for NMSF are required to sign a contract with NMSF which includes a prohibition from collecting, using or sharing confidential information outside the scope of their work for NMSF.

NMSF takes precautions to protect your information. When you submit sensitive information via the website, your information is protected both online and offline.
Wherever NMSF collects sensitive personal financial information, including credit and debit card data, such information is encrypted and transmitted to us in a secure way. You can verify this by looking for the closed lock icon at the bottom of your web browser or the “https” at the beginning of the address of the web page.
While NMSF uses encryption to protect sensitive information transmitted online, we also protect your information offline. Only NMSF employees who require the information to perform a specific job (for example, billing or customer service) are granted access to personally identifiable information. The software programs we use and the server on which NMSF stores personally identifiable information are password-protected, kept in a secure environment and maintained with current security settings by NMSF’s IT team.
Donations, Registrations and Purchases
We request information from you on our donation, registration and order forms. This information is used for billing purposes and to fill your orders. If we have trouble processing an order, we’ll use this information to contact you. Where event registration is required by NMSF, a user is required to give certain information (such as name and email address). This information is used to contact you about the donations, products or services in which you have expressed interest.
We use “cookies” to help us understand traffic and use of our Sites and improve your user experience. A cookie is a piece of data stored on a site visitor’s hard drive that enables us to recognize repeat visitors and facilitate your access if you have saved Personal Information data. Cookies also provide us with information enabling us to understand visitors’ browser types, mobile device types, content visited, duration of time spent on the Sites, navigation patterns and other viewing habits. All information is aggregated and usage of a cookie is in no way linked to any personally identifiable information on our Sites.
Links and Passive Third-Party Sites
Our Sites may contain passive links to other independent sites and unaffiliated third parties. The inclusion of a link on the Sites does not imply endorsement by NMSF of the linked site or service. Please be aware that we are not responsible for the content or privacy practices of such other sites or third parties. In addition, we are not responsible for the information collection, use, disclosure or security practices (including the data security practices) of independent operating system providers, social media platform providers, app developers or providers, wireless service providers or device manufacturers. We encourage our users to be aware when they leave our site and to read the privacy statements of any other site that collects personally identifiable information.
Advocacy Campaigns and Personal Information
Our advocacy outreach is conducted through One Click Politics (OCP), a third-party vendor whose services we licensed. Messages you may generate through NMSF Sites for us to route to elected officials, leadership of certain organizations or other policymakers are performed through the OCP product and platform. When you send a message or sign a petition on NMSF Sites, we require your name, email address, zip code and city to correctly route the message. Other information requested in our Personal Information form is optional.
OCP may enable you to choose to publish messages on your profiles. When this is done, OCP will not disclose your physical address or phone number but it may disclose a portion of your name and Congressional District, e.g., “Jamie S. in Virginia’s 1st Congressional District”.
